Let me show you how to make this classic pressure cooker sloppy joe recipe in easy steps.

Easy Homemade Instant Pot Sloppy Joe Recipe

This easy instant pot sloppy joes recipe is made without Manwich. Not because I don’t like easy and little help in the kitchen. I really don’t like opening any other types of can food if it is not baked beans or tomatoes and the occasional legumes. I have found a way around this, thanks to instant pot I now make chickpeas and black-eyed beans half the time it normally takes to cook them on the stove top and I get to save on money too. Also, canned sloppy joe sauce is not readily available to us in the UK. This is the way I have been making this recipe a while now and I have never used any canned sauce, including chopped tomatoes. I can tell you it is the best homemade sloppy joes you would ever make. I like to keep it simple, just a tad tangy, not overly sweet or too spicy that my children wouldn’t be able to handle. My ground beef repertoire is slowly growing on the blog. This instant pot Taco meat is now beginning to get popular and this instant pot Korean ground beef bowl. These two recipes are made in an instant pot and they only require about 8 minutes active cooking time at the most. Ever since I acquired the instant pot, I’ve found it super easy to cook ground beef (mince meat). I love how it is hand free and the fact that I can have dinner on the table in 15 minutes with perfect texture of meat. The meat melts in your mouth and it’s perfect at all times. If you are yet to invest in an instant pot or any other electric pressure cooker, I think it is worth it, check these easy recipes you can make in it. Tried and tested and fool proof recipes the whole family would love, kids and adult alike. I use instant pot DUO 6qt and pressure king pro (if you are in the UK), I can’t love them less. It was a worthy investment for my kitchen. I don’t serve sloppy joes with burger buns alone, I sometimes serve it with pasta or over rice. Great comfort food that is quick, simple and stress-free

Ingredients

Lean ground beef: this can be substituted with ground turkey or chicken. Although, the original recipe uses ground beef. Onions Minced garlic Green bell pepper Yellow mustard Ketchup Tomato paste Worcestershire sauce Liquid smoke: this is optional but use it if you have it as it gives the sauce a touch of delicious smoky flavour. This is why I was able to get away with not using chili powder in this recipe. Beef stock Salt and pepper Burger buns: plain or brioche, I prefer brioche bun

How to make instant pot sloppy joes in easy steps

Turn on the instant pot and select the sauté button and leave until hot, add the ground beef, break it up and stir the beef continuously until browned.  Drain the fat if need be especially if you are not using lean beef. Add the chopped green pepper, onions and garlic and stir for another minute or two to soften the onions and pepper a bit. Add beef stock, the browned beef and deglaze the bottom of the pot in other to avoid getting BURN notice. You shouldn’t anyway if you followed this recipe to the letter. Cancel the sauté function Go on and add the rest of the ingredients, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, tomato paste, salt and pepper, Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke. Slightly stir at the top to mix the ingredients without touching the bottom of the pan. Cover the instant pot and turn the valve to the sealing position. Select manual or pressure cook and cook the ground beef mixture for 8 minutes on high pressure. After the cooking cycle is completed, leave the pot to natural pressure release for 5 minutes then carefully do a quick release to depressurise the pot. Open the lid of the IP and stir the sloppy joes mixture to combine. You shouldn’t have much liquid in the sauce at this point. To thicken the sauce, turn on the sauté function and stir the sloppy joes continuously until it thickens to desired consistency. While you are waiting on the pot to depressurise, toast the burger buns so they are ready to be served immediately with the sloppy joes.

To make instant pot sloppy joes with frozen ground beef

First, sauté the onions, garlic, and green pepper in 1 tablespoon on cooking oil of choice. Turn off the sauté function. Add rest of the ingredients listed above apart from the frozen ground beef (minced meat) and stir to combine. Make sure that you deglaze the bottom of the pan Carefully place the frozen ground beef in the sauce and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes, 5 minutes NPR. Note: the green pepper would be soft after cooking, if you would still like the pepper to have a bite to it after cooking, pressure cook half of it and add the remaining after the cooking cycle is completed. This recipe can also be made in a crockpot too, so go ahead and use it if that is what you have.

Tips

Swap the tomato ketchup for BBQ sauce and omit the liquid smoke. Add soy sauce to this recipe for more umami flavour. Add oil to the pot if using ground turkey or chicken.
