If you have had yum yum before and loved it then you will love today’s recipe. Honestly, you may never go to using ketchup on its own if you tried this recipe, it is simply the best! I must admit I have been making fry sauce at home before I knew what it was called. Yes, I live in the UK and the best we have is the curry sauce from Mcdonalds and the good old mayonnaise and ketchup.

What is fry sauce

It is a simple condiment or should I say dipping sauce served with French fries. It is made with mayonnaise, ketchup and other ingredients of choice. This is one of the reasons I love this sauce as it is versatile and can be customised to taste. Fry sauce originated from Utah but this Nigerian, Manchester girl and her family love it just like the Americans do. Other similar condiments include mayoketchup and seafood sauce (Salsa rosa)

Ingredients

Mayonnaise: you can agree with me that every good sauce or dip starts with a high-quality creamy mayonnaise. Ketchup: this is a match made in heaven with mayonnaise. I wouldn’t recommend low sugar ketchup for this recipe. it needs the real thing to balance the tanginess from other ingredients used for the sauce. Smoked paprika: you can also use sweet paprika but I am a real sucker for smoked paprika. Worcestershire sauce Garlic powder Cayenne pepper for a little kick, you can also use hot sauce or sriracha. Apple cider vinegar: substitute for any pickle brine of choice. Salt to taste: this is completely optional as some of the other ingredients already contains a bit of salt.

How to make fry sauce

A good starting point for this recipe is using 2:1 ratio for the mayonnaise and ketchup. That said, the reason you are making this at home is to be able to make it your own. Feel free to adjust this dipping sauce to taste. To a mixing bowl, add mayonnaise, ketchup, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar. Whisk to combine then taste to check if it needs salt or not. Season with salt and adjust to taste. Place the sauce in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving or use straight away if you can’t wait. Serve with your favourite hot fries of choice.

What to serve it with

The first obvious answer is french fries but that is not the end of it. you can serve this quick dipping sauce with hamburgers, shrimps, turkey burgers, potato wedges. You can even use it as a salad dressing for vegetables or pasta.

How to store

This sauce has a good shelf life or up to one week in the refrigerator. Store in an airtight container and spoon out the portion you need at a time. Do not directly dip the fries/chips/tostones or whatever you choose to pair it with into the sauce, to avoid cross-contamination.
